Hacktivists Claim $100M Cyberattack on Iran’s Nobitex Exchange
Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex suffered a $100 million security breach on Thursday, with hacktivist group Gonjeshke Darande claiming responsibility. The Israel-linked collective, known for targeting Iranian institutions, appears to have executed the attack as a political statement rather than for financial gain.
This follows the group's June 17 cyberattack on Bank Sepah, where they claimed complete destruction of the financial institution's data. Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic notes the stolen Nobitex funds were sent to vanity addresses containing anti-IRGC slogans, suggesting ideological motivations behind the attack.
